How a Fruit Bowl Can Help You Eat Better

Forming healthy habits, like eating more fruits and vegetables, can be tough. Though regularly eating fruit is a health habit that we should embrace. This may explain why, according to a study by the Center for Disease Control, only 1 out of 10 American adults eats enough produce.

According to research, habits are more likely to be formed when there is a consistent cue (something reminding you do something) and repetition in the behavior (you do something frequently and repeatedly). With this in mind, one of the most effective ways to remember to eat more produce is by keeping a well-stocked fruit bowl in plain view!

Besides looking beautiful in your kitchen, dining room or office, fruit bowls keep satisfying fruit front and center. Intuitive eating is also a growing trend and a full-to-the-brim fruit bowl is well-suited to this eating pattern! Try out these tips that will help you eat more fruits and vegetables while developing healthier eating habits as a whole:

  • Try placing a fruit bowl on your kitchen counter or in your office to cue you to eat fruit and encourage frequent consumption. It’s a simple trick that can go a long way.
  • Set a good example! If those around you are choosing to snack on fruit, you’re more likely to join in. For instance, research has looked at the impact that parents can have on their children’s fruit and vegetable intake. One study found that when parents frequently ate fruits and vegetables in front of their children, their children were more likely to meet the daily recommendation for fruit and vegetable intake.
  • Spread the love! Encourage your family, friends and coworkers to fill their fruit bowl. It’s easier to hold yourself accountable when everyone is modeling good habits.
